My current Mac has 16GB RAM and an SSD as well. I would still be using that Mac, if the keyboard had not started to fail, and my discrete GPU didn't start to also start to fail. Later I replaced the rotational hard disk with an SSD, and that helped a lot. I first upgraded my Mac to 16GB which helped. I tend to add software to my Macs, and it is possible I had a combination that did not play nice. Now this could have also been the way I was using my Mac. I found that Lion was not happy with 4GB of RAM for how I was using my Mac. That way you have the option to decide what version you are going to run.

You can either keep the downloaded Applications -> Install macOS Sierra (or similar name for future releases), save it somewhere else, or delete it and get it again from the App Store -> Purchases tab. When downloading a Major macOS release, as soon as it starts the install, you just "Quit" the installer. In the future, download a copy of each major OS release so that you will then have that version of the OS in your App Store -> Purchases tab, which you will then be allowed to download again in the future.
